Your last refuge?
Now that you've completed your service project at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, what do you think? Did you make a meaningful contribution? Would you like to have done more? If so, what? Please respond by Tuesday, Oct. 26.
After completing our work at the refuge, I think it went well. I had fun with everybody while giving back to the community. I learned a lot about invasive species in AP environmental last year and I know how harmful they can end up being to an ecosystem; so I thought it was a very good way to provide our service to the community. I feel that I made a meaningful contribution. I clipped down the Buckthorn and helped using the saw. I think it would have been better if we could have stayed and helped longer over a wider area but altogether I thought it was a great learning experience and a great way to give back to the community.
After completing the service project at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, I thought it was a lot of work but I enjoyed being outside and getting out of class. I would have liked to learn more about the other trees and wild life the refuge has to offer. I would like to go back and do some more work.
After volunteering at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, I was very surprised by how much I actually enjoyed it and learned from it. I believe that I made a meaningful contribution to the environment by cutting down the Buckthorns. I also feel that I made a meaningful contribution to the community, because the area will eventually be opened for people to view. I was one of the cutters, which was a a very difficult task because I had to maneuver around the plants, branches, and other trees in order to actually saw the Buckthorns. It was also very difficult, because some of the Buckthorns were larger than others and involved a lot of team work. I think that everyone worked really well together by identifying the Buckthorn, cutting it down, and daubing the remaining stub. I would definitely like to have done more by staying longer, because I know that we did not remove all of the Buckthorn.
When we were at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, I had a lot more fun than I thought we were going to. I was surprised at how much work the students did much of the work. For some reason I assumed that I'd be doing a lot more watching and sharing of the work but there was so much to do that everyone was always doing something. I thought the whole class worked pretty well as a team too. However because there was a lot of work to do I feel like we just made a small dent in progress. Kristy said that we were just focusing on the tress near the trail so there's still plenty deep inside the marsh I assume. Also she showed us the tiny sprouts of buckthorn trees all over. I think we did do a lot of work for a couple of hours but there is still plenty to do.
I had a really good time volunteering at Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge doing the service project. I was not really looking forward to it at first, but once we got there and I realized how hands-on it was, I had a great time working together with everyone and killing an invasive species of trees. For the amount of time we spent there, it doesn't seem like we accomplished that much, but It was still a rewarding experience and I would got back to help out again.
After my Wildlife Refuge service was completed I had a lot of fun getting to know my classmates and my teachers. I at first was a spotter and then after a while I helped cut down some major buck thorn that was very large that the clippers could not do alone. I had a lot of fun and I wish I could have helped for a longer period of time. I believe that this was a good learning experience for me, and it was hard labor. The next day I have to admit my arms were a little sore from pushing over those big trees.
The service project was something I have never done before. Meaning, that I have never done one for a Refuge. I felt accomplished once I was done because I know I made a meaningful contribution. Going into this project I didn't think I'd have as much fun as I did but once I got started I didn't want to stop for a bit. I would like to have done more just not right then since I was tired. I don't know what I would want to have done but all I know is something more meaningful.
The service project made me feel good about myself. Not just for helping kill Buckthorn, but because it was wonderful to be outside and not stuck in the classroom. I never imagined that we would get to go on field trips in college. We could have done more though. We should have stayed a whole day, not just two or three hours. There's definitely a lot more Buckthorn that needs to get sawed down. I would be happy to go back and do it again.
After completing our work at the wildlife refuge I believe that our time was well spent. I felt, as if, we were helping out our community instead of harming it. I felt like our efforts wouldn't go unseen. I would have loved to stay longer or to go back to do more work. I liked everything about our service learning project. I liked how we were helping the environment. I also like doing something for our community and giving back to nature. I would like to learn more about what else we can do to help. I would have liked to get rid of more buckthorns, but getting rid of some was better than nothing.
After finishing our service learning project, I felt as if we could've done more. Honestly, I would not want to do more, since I was tired after doing what I've already done, but maybe return on a later day. I would have to say that I did enjoy the work a little bit, since I did some sawing and clipping, instead of just daubing. And I did have a small Buckthorn fall on me which was ok, since I didn't get hurt. Also, I learned a little bit about invasive species, which was cool.
After completing our work at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, my mind is completely changed from the idea I had after we went for the "orientation." I had fun while we were there and felt like we were working towards a very good cause. It is important to keep some of the natural habitat because all of the civilization has caused death of many of our mammals, insects, etc. I know our cause was good, but I feel like we barely made a dent in taking out the invasive buckthorn. I think there is a lot more work to go into making sure diversity stays in the habitat there and I would like to do more at the refuge. We could have stayed longer and killed more buckthorn and they talk of how the refuge is short staffed so I am sure there are many more tasks that need to be completed and would make it easier on the rangers if they had a big group to help them out
I think everything ran smoothly and I didn't have any problems with it. I think we made a meaningful contribution, but I wish we could have stayed longer. I would have liked to kill other invasive species at the DRIWR. Maybe we could even go back there sometime.
I really enjoyed working at the refuge. It went much better than I thought it would. It was great learning about how invasive species affect their ecosystem. I feel like I made an impact on the refuge, even if it was just helpful to the rangers. But in the long run, this small bit of work will help reduce the buckthorn population.
Now that we have completed our work at DRIWR, I have a different idea of the whole thing than I did when we went for orientation. Volunteering was a lot of fun and the time went by faster than I thought it would. I felt good to do something and give back to the community. Cutting down backthorn gave me a sense of power and our group had a fun attitude and personality about everything. Everyone helped out and got involved. I'd like to go back and work more. I felt that we didn't get enough done for the little time we had.
If I would have went to Detroit River Wildlife Refuge I probably would have made a meaningful contribution. I do wish I could do more to help like get more of the Buckthorn trees out of there and clean up other things that do not need to be there.
After the service learning project I felt accomplished. I had a lot of fun and enjoyed it more than I thought. I think we all made a meaningful contribution. Everyone came together to help kill the invasive species, buckthorn. I would’ve liked to stay longer even. It was fun being outside on a nice sunny day, better than being stuck in a classroom. I would’ve liked to kill more buckthorn and try to make an even deeper impact at the refuge. Even though we didn’t kill all the buckthorn, it’s better than killing none. So I felt good about my contribution and helping the environment and would like to help more with the environment in the future.
