"I have a theory that people who come from large families are better people because they’ve just had to learn to get along."
I picked this quote because I come from a very large family. I believe this quote is true because if I didn't have my family I probably would not have such a high patience tolerance. I would probably become enraged faster than I do now and I would probably not have as many best friends as I do now.
"We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand."
This particular quote means a lot to me. I believe strongly that you must make the decisions in your life to get where you want to be. You cannot change who you were born as, or where you were born, or if you lack some skills. The important thing to do is to take all the qualities that you do have and make the best of them. You should work hard at the things that do not come easy to you. Just because you may have to put a lot of effort into something does not mean it is impossible. You should never sit around and just let life run its course. It is always best to take action and strive towards your goals.
Randy Pausch said, “be good at something, it makes you valuable.” This quote is inspiring because it basically says that you need to work toward something. Anything. Any one thing that you can do that not everyone else can sets you apart and makes you valuable. You don’t have to be good at everything, and you don’t have to be good at the same things as your friends, all you need to worry about is finding your niche in life and doing your best at it. Everyone has something different they’re good at, so you need to find your skill and utilize it.
"...if you dispense your own wisdom, others will often dismiss it; if you offer wisdon from a third party it seems less arrogant and more acceptable"
This quote is absolutely, completely true. I have given advice to my friends and they never would listen, but if I said "oh, my mom said..." or "my dad says..." they would take the advice and run with it and say it was great advice. I have now learned that when I give advice I should say someone else told me, atleast they'd listen!
"You’ve got to get the fundamentals down because otherwise the fancy stuff isn’t going to work."
This is my favorite quote out of this whole entire book. I have this quote engraved on a plaque at home that hangs over my bed. This quote applies to many things throughout my life. My favorite subject my whole life has been math. This quote applies to Math because as you get older you must have the basics of addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication to do any of the harder Math as you get older. This quote also connects to basketball. Since the day I touched a basketball in 5th grade I knew I loved the game. This obviously connects to basketball, one must first understand the concept of dribbling to later learn behind the back and between the legs. One must also learn the basics of a shot before they are able to consistently knock down three's. This also connects to life in general because as a child you must learn basic principles such as honesty, compassion, and love to grow up and learn to do the harder things in life. One must learn these simple lessons of life to later grow and learn as they make their decisions throughout their life.
“Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you wanted.” The quote says it all. You get experience in every thing you do. If your doing something you want you still get experience, it just doesn’t feel like it. If it something you didn’t want, you still learn from it. Nothing is a waste of your time if you look at it from an educational perspective.
"...The brick walls are there to stop the people who don't want it badly enough. They're there to stop the other people."
This quote from Randy Pauch's The Last Lecture is my absolute favorite: ever since I read it, it has been in my "back pocket." Whenever I am doing a task that seems impossible, I just think back to this quote and scale that "brick wall" in my way. The thing that I like most about this quote is the attitude that it conveys; a fighter's attitude. The attitude that nothing can stand in your way.
"You've got to get the fundamentals down because otherwise the fancy stuff isn't going to work."
I chose this quote because I've seen something like this happen before. In high school I took an art class and we were working with clay. One of the students in my class wanted to impress our teacher so he chose to make a little chest full of drawers. Instead of measuring out pieces and using the techniques specifically for putting pieces of clay together, he winged it and when the chest was fired the first time, it had collapsed in the kiln. Its never a good idea to try to accomplish a task without practicing the smaller skills needed or reading the directions first. Biting off more than one can chew is a recipe for disaster.
"We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand." I've chosen this quote, because there was one "curve-ball" I had to deal with in my life and I could not change how it ended, just how to cope with the change. Now, I'm happy that I didn't get to change how the "curve-ball" changed my life/
"Apologize when you screw up and focus on other people, not on yourself."
I chose this quote because it actually reflects upon myself the most. I have always been the type of person that apologizes but hangs it over my head. I always wondered why I do that and I think it's because I've been the type of person that puts others before myself.
"We can not change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand." This quote really applies to me. You learn from your mistakes and from experience, and that makes you who you are today. Even though things may not seem right now, it can't stay stormy forever and you can change who you are and who you'll become.
"When you see yourself doing something badly and nobody’s bothering to tell you anymore, that’s a very bad place to be. Your critics are your ones telling you they still love you and care."
This quote means alot to me because my cheer coach used this quote on a daily basis and it always made us work hard. We where afraid that she was going to stop careing for us. sometimes we on purpose tryed to mess up just to make sure she still loved us.
"We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand."
I chose this quote because I agree that whatever happens happens and all you can do is deal with it in the best way possible. We have to deal with the consequences of our actions or what has happened. We can't turn back time and change things we can just do the best with what we have in order to help our future.
"We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand."
This quote relates how I live my life. We cannot control what happens in our life, just how we deal with it. We have to manage our life our way. In some way, you cannot control what comes at you, just what happens to you in the end. For example, in "The Last Lecture" he had to deal with his illness in his own way. His way was to tell people how to live a full life and not dwell on the little things.
"The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough."
I like this quote because I know what it's like to have to climb over a brick wall to achieve what you want. In 2003 I started playing ice hockey and was probably one of the worst players on the team so I had to prove that I deserved to be on the team and I did.
We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.
I picked this particular statement, because I believe that we are responsible for getting what we want in life. Sometimes in life we are dealt a bad hand, meaning we may be facing rough times that challenge us emotionally or physically. There is no way to go back in time and change the past, present, or future. We have to face the problems we are dealt and learn from our experiences or mistakes. Sometimes, we can make the most or best out of a situation and actually find that we may learn or enjoy something we never thought we would.
There are many quotes in this book that caught my eye. The quote "I have a theory that people who come from large families are better people because they've just had to learn to get along" is one that I can relate to most. I come from a big, loving, halarious faimily, which makes me used to all kinds of different personalities, meaning that I can get long with most people because I've gotten used to most personalities.
"The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough."
Many people don't know how to overcome obstacles so when times are hard they either give up and walk away or they don't even try. Now Randy Pausch is telling us that what ever we believed about obstacles is wrong, he tells us that if we really want what we are seeking no matter what happens, you have to keep going.
